Castalia Co. Ltd. (headquarters: Tokyo, Japan, hereinafter “Castalia”) is pleased to announce the launch of CodeEdu, a course to foster programming educators, as a joint project with Associate Professor Yasumasa Oomori (hereinafter “Associate Professor Oomori”) of Joetsu University of Education (location: Niigata, Japan, hereinafter “JUEN”). The project started accepting registrations from September 2016.

CodeEdu/ is an educator fostering program offered to teachers engaged in programming education in primary education, and people involved in programming education targeting children.
The presence and fostering of instructors have been a big issue in the overall programming education from elementary through high school.
Castalia and Associate Professor Oomori have been researching on programming education, as a joint project with Shingakukai (headquarters: Nagano, Japan). From November 2015 through March 2016, we conducted a feasibility study targeting third and fourth graders in Nagano City. The result was developed into “An instructor fostering program corresponding to the programming education curriculum in elementary and secondary education” and have made presentations on occasions, such as the Computers and Education Seminar hosted by Information Processing Society of Japan in July 2016. The course draws from the achievements of the research, and is designed so that even those who have never experienced programming can teach.

■Course Features
The course is offered in the flipped-classroom style that combines online and physical schoolings. Students can study digital content-based lectures online, such as videos, free from time and location restrictions. Online lectures are compatible with multiple devices, namely smartphones, tablets, and PCs. The physical schooling takes a hands-on workshop style where students work together with their classmates to develop a learning material and teach a mock lecture, and acquire practical skills required in various teaching scenes after the completion of the course.
Instructors include Takashi Matsuda, former principal of Maehara Elementary School, Koganei City, Associate Professor Oomori of JUEN, and Taro Matsumura, journalist of vice principal of Code Academy High School. They will share their rich experiences and knowledge.
