Castalia Co., Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) released the updated version of their iOS app WIKIHIKE, on October 20, 2017. Now with an AR function, the update is with iOS only this time and is available for download at App Store.
WIKIHIKE is an iPhone app with which you can share your learnings with people with similar interests in a sort of “circulating the knowledge” through Wikipedia. By searching on WIKIHIKE the words that you became curious about through daily conversations or reading articles, you can create your own archive of knowledge.

The main feature of this release is the newly added AR (augmented reality) function. Now we are in the unprecedented AR boom such as Pokémon GO which became a major phenomenon last year. Google also introduced Google Lens, an image recognition app at Google I/O 2017 this past May; the use of AR has become more and more accessible. And so we added an AR function to Wikipedia, a service available for everyone free of charge.
When you turn on the AR function on WIKIHIKE, it utilizes the location information registered on Wikipedia and shows on your smartphone screen historical sites, buildings, and even information on local festivals within the 10km radius. Your ordinary, familiar landscape is now seen in a totally new and different view.
