CASTALIA’S IT-UTILIZATION PROJECT IN EGYPT FOR ELEMENTARY EDUCATION SELECTED AS ONE OF THE PROJECTS TO RECEIVE JICA’S FIRST FY2019 SME/SDG BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT
“SDGs Business Model Formulation Survey with the Private Sector for Advanced Japanese-style Primary
Education Utilizing Information Technology,” planned by Castalia Co. Ltd. (headquarters: Tokyo, Japan) to take place in the
Arabic Republic of Egypt, has been selected by Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) as a commissioned project of business
model formulation surveys to benefit from JICA’s Small and Medium Enterprises / Sustainable Development Goals Overseas Business
Development Support (the first of FY2019).
Small and Medium Enterprises / Sustainable Development Goals Overseas Business Development Support is a proposal-based commission project that supports the overseas development of small and medium size enterprises in Japan.
As explained on JICA’s website: “The support system matches the development needs of developing countries and excellent product and
technologies offered by Japan’s public sectors, and aim to find solutions to ‘businesses that contribute to the accomplishment of SDGs
(SDGs businesses)’ and problems that those countries have, and to enhance the relationship between the two countries through ODAs
and further promote economic relationship.”
The population in Africa is expected to double to 2.5 billion by 2050, which consists of 800 million people under 14 years of age. While the
demands for the development of youth education is high, the actual quality of school education is low; it is estimated that as of 2017,
almost 90% of children have not acquired minimum reading, writing, and math skills.
With the population growing at an astonishing rate and the unstable social and economic circumstances as main background factors,
problems such as the lack and low quality of school facilities and teacher have come out. Youths who did not receive sufficient education
cannot get jobs and as a result, it has been strongly pointed out that they may turn to extremism. For the sake of the peace and stability
of Egypt and surrounding regions, solutions to such issues through education has become critical.
Through this project, we will conduct a survey and a feasibility study that simulates an implementation at Egypt-Japan school, a school
sponsored by the Japanese government and promotes Japan-style education, and aim to popularize online education in elementary
education in Egypt.
The survey will start from FY2020.
